Well MercyMe! The Christian rock band’s arguably iconic and classic song, “I Can Only Imagine,” is getting its own movie, going by the same title, and the first trailer unquestionably looks to be an inspiring journey whether you are a Christian or religious audience member or not.
I Can Only Imagine (2018) centers on Bart Millard (J. Michael Finley), the lead singer of MercyMe, who, because of losing his father (Dennis Quaid) to cancer, writes the moving song that this film it titled after, and we can hear ever so slightly the opening music of the song of piano notes here as the trailer builds the setup and eventually the tune as well.
Following movies this year like The Shack (2017) and The Case For Christ (2017), this looks like your typical Christian movie fare: a few maybe not so polished performances, but surrounded by enough caliber to make it work. The thing to keep in mind with films like this is that while we wish everything about these types of movies could be a little more sophisticated, the backbone and reason for these movies is the stories, and this trailer is really selling a fascinating and emotionally true to life event that has never been told. It looks to have the potential to be life-changing for certain audiences.
