Almost Human Co-Showrunner Naren Shankar Exits Show

The first episodes of Fox’s new sci-fi drama Almost Human haven’t even aired. Already, there’s behind-the-scenes drama to be shared!

Naren Shankar, no stranger to sci-fi due to his involvement as executive producer and co-executive producer on Farscape as early as 1999 (with recent EP credits on NBC’s Grimm), has left the fledgling Fox show. Shankar’s name will be most well known from his decade over at the CSI franchise. He was definitely a wealth of experience for the fledging drama to draw on.

Since few people have seen much footage other than pilots and teaser materials, the wider implications of this seasoned producer’s departure are as yet unknown. This leaves the man whose brainchild Almost Human is – Joel Wyman – as sole showrunner.

As everyone who has watched only five minutes of Fringe (on which he served as EP as well as writer on a number of episodes) realises, the sky truly is the limit on this human/non-human (or buddy/non-buddy) police drama.

The split from the show has been described as having been an ‘amicable’ one according to DigitalSpy. It resulted from ‘creative differences’, so that may not preclude Shankar from future involvement.

As one of the highly anticipated dramas of the fall viewing season (it’s in my top three after Sleepy Hollow and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Almost Human pairs Karl Urban and Michael Ealy as the show’s main characters. Lili Taylor, Mackenzie Crook, Minka Kelly and Michael Irby will round out the main cast.

Almost Human will premiere November 4th at 8pm EST.
