Anime Sensation ‘Your Name’ Coming To U.S. Theaters

Makoto Shinkai’s blockbuster anime film and worldwide hit ‘Your Name’ is set to hit theaters across North America in April 2017.

The blockbuster animated hit, Kimi no Na, translated to Your Name, will be showing in theaters across North America this spring for a limited time. It will be released with both an English dub and with English subtitles coupled with the original audio. The movie is directed by Makoto Shinkai, who is most well-known for tender stories like Voices of a Distant Star and Five Centimeters Per Second. Your Name has been critically acclaimed to be gentle and endearing but heartbreaking as well.

The story revolves around two high school students, Mitsuha and Taki. Mitsuha lives in a rural mountain town with a very traditional family and wishes for a more exciting life in the city. Taki lives in Tokyo and is always busy with his studies and his part-time job. One day, after dreaming of each other, they wake up and realize they have switched bodies. Besides the strangeness of adjusting to this weird situation and the hurdle of living a stranger’s life, both Mitsuha and Taki slowly realize that they have a profound connection and become determined to find each other. Watch the Japanese trailer below.

Your Name has been wildly successful in Japan and was the most popular film of the summer. Since it opened on August 26, 2016, it has remained a top ten film ever since. It has earned approximately 20.5 billion yen in ticket sales — or nearly 179 million dollars — making it the fourth highest grossing film of all time in Japan. In terms of anime films, the only movie to gross higher in Japan is Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away. However, it has since surpassed Spirited Away in worldwide box office sales, where Your Name has pulled in 281 million dollars.

Your Name is set to open in theaters on April 7, 2017.
