A bench warrant has been issued for the arrest of Anita Baker, known for her iconic song “Sweet Love.” According to TMZ, it was “issued yesterday after the singer failed to show up to court for a hearing in her current legal battle with a paint and decorating company.” She has since been subpoenaed to keep her appearance in court, after failing to do so last September.
A complainant filed by Ray Smith Painting and Decorating claims that she owes the company $15,000 for services such as carpentry, plastering and painting work done inside her Grosse Pointe home.
According to ClickOnDetroit, it is not the first time Baker has encountered justice problems. Indeed, in 2010, “a judge threatened to lock her up for allegedly failing to sign documents in her divorce dispute.”
While the dispute took place in 2009, the “default judgment for $15,351.41” was not filed until April 2011. The most recent warrant went through on Wednesday, March 19.
