If you have ever been covered under Anthem health insurance, you may be one of the 80 million customers who have had their information stolen, today. Anthem president and CEO, Joseph Swedish released information today that the insurance giant was the target of an external cyber attack.
Hackers got through the computer system and were able to access information such as names, Social Security numbers, birthdays, street addresses, and employment information.
Though the estimate is that 80 million people will be affected by this breach, there is still much to investigate, according to Anthem spokeswoman Cindy Wakefield.
At this time it does not appear as if any medical information was stolen in the attack, nor was credit card information obtained. However, it’s possible that enough information was found by the hackers to steal identities. Anthem is working closely with the FBI to obtain more information on the hack.
Anthem has since launched a website, http://www.anthemfacts.com, where present and former members can get information. Members can also call 877-263-7995. If you are a customer who notices any suspect activities with financial accounts, you can report it at http://www.ic3.gov.
