Supporting Local Art By Crawling Across The Nation

Art crawls are a great way to learn more about your city, explore work of local artists, and support the community. Find out if there’s one in your area!

Art crawls are events that bring the community together through local art. Most are hosted by local nonprofits that rely on volunteers and donations in order to host the event. They are usually held once a month, and, on that specific day, people from all over the city can come together at the designated place and walk from location to location. The crawls are usually set up amongst a group of restaurants and bars where the artists are inside displaying their art. It’s a chance for the people leaving work to go someplace where they might get a little more than an after work drink.

Art crawls take place all over the country from Nashville, TN to St. Paul, Minnesota and almost everywhere in between. Do a quick Google search in your city, and you might just have one. These events take place one day each month, and most crawls have a map available to their visitors so that they know where to go and who to see. Many of the crawls also have volunteers on hand for the day of event to help people stay on track and know where to go. They also feature events and competitions to encourage crowd participation. These could be anything from checking in on social media to a scavenger hunt throughout the downtown venue.

Birmingham, AL has an Art Crawl of their own, which was started in June of 2014 and takes place in Birmingham’s Historic District. Birmingham’s Art Crawl takes place on the first Thursday of each month from 5-9pm rain or shine. The community of Birmingham supports the Art Crawl through many sponsorships, which is essential to any Art Crawls success. The Art Crawl itself provides the community with a chance to come together and support local artists. They market themselves as an organization while also doing a wonderful job at highlighting the local business and boutiques through town. They also give artists a chance to show off and sell their work that they might not otherwise without the Crawl. The Art Crawl does not just feature artists who paint or draw but also wood workers and musicians take part. The variety of different art displayed is a key factor in bringing in a diverse crowed to enjoy the event.

What art crawls truly stand for is strength with a community, and we wanted to highlight those so that each city’s art crawl can get as many attendees as possible. Like we said above, Google “art crawl” in your city if this sounds like something you’d have fun attending, and here are a few links to some cities that have them. We took the liberty of doing some of the research for you! And, if you’ve been to an art crawl, comment below and let us know how it was!
