Author Anne Rice Defends Paula Deen…Sort Of…!

Paula Deen has had a rough week. She’s lost her contracts with Food Network and Smithfield Foods, is in danger of losing her contract with QVC as they are “reviewing the relationship,” and the only people in her corner appear to be her sons—— and they’re not great at playing defense, either. However, it looks as though Deen has at least one famous name in her corner: famous supernatural author Anne Rice. Rice decided to fight fire with fire and head on over to Facebook and sound off on the topic. Though, her comments may end up doing more harm than good.

Rice’s first post started innocuously enough: “What’s happening with Paula Dean? Is it fair? I never heard of her until today, and wow, this looks like a crucifixion. Opinions, thoughts welcome…. aren’t we becoming something of a lynch mob culture?” Hmmm. A vampire author accusing Americans of being lynch mobs. Interesting…

Rice then decided that instead of waiting for fan opinions, she’d contribute her own: “…This woman is just what you said. She’s an old southern lady, and she never made these unwise remarks of hers to a black person. We have no evidence at all that she has ever personally insulted or injured any black employee or friend.” Well sure, Anne. Obviously racism is acceptable as long as it’s closeted and not directed at any one individual.

However, the whole “no evidence” thing that Rice claims is, well, just false. This entire ordeal was prompted as a result of Deen’s sworn deposition about the offense level of jokes. “I can’t, myself, determine what offends another person,” Deen stated before exclaiming that she wanted to employee “all black waiters for her brother’s 2007 wedding.”

Rice was far from finished and remained on Facebook to make her closing statement: “It’s so easy to persecute an older, overweight, unwise, crude, ignorant woman who may very well be a good person at heart who has achieved a great deal in her life. So easy to vilify her and hate her and try to destroy her life. Woe to anyone today who is not slender, young, clever and politically correct.”

Deen appeared on the Today show this morning to render a formal apology.

Hey, Anne Rice! You just called Paula Deen a fat, ignorant, moron; I’m sure that will make her feel so much better. Maybe stick to writing and stop defending people. You’re just making it worse!
