Aziz Ansari is tackling the age old question: “What is love?”

Moving on, Ansari, stand up comic and former Parks and Recreation star, has always been on point when it comes to cultural observations and riffing on societal obsessions. So it is very exciting that he has announced that he is writing a book about texting, sexting and the Tinder/Grindr obsession in society du jour.
Ansari himself has admitted he is a relentless flirt, so writing a book on modern love just seemed like the next logical step for the comedian.
What’s exciting about this is that Aziz Ansari has a wonderful and nuanced way of looking at the world. He even included Modern Love in the world of the smart phone as a large part of his stand-up lately, so it will be interesting to see how it translates from stage to screen to scribbled on a page.
Technology is a massive part of our everyday lives. Our smart phones have almost become an extension of ourselves, with apps like Facebook, Snapchat and WhatsApp commonly being used as verbs. Social Media is everywhere. We are in a world where we expect things to become evident instantly. Which is odd when you think about love.
Some people believe that love hits you instantaneously. And in the age of the internet, people are actually becoming more cynical in regard to love. People are meeting through Apps, not face to face, so you are able to convey your internet self, which can differ from your true self. So how is one to know how modern love will work?
Some people find it better, others lament the digital age. Either way, it is clear to see that love in the digital age is growing, expanding and affecting cultural norms.
And, honestly, I’m just excited to see Aziz Ansari’s take on love and technology.
