Baseball Legend Jim Fergosi Passes Away At 71

Jim Fregosi has passed due to complications from a stroke suffered in the Cayman Islands. He was reported dead on Friday morning, February 15th.

 

The baseball legend was 71-years-old, and still highly active in MLB activities, having operated as a special assistant and scout for the Atlanta Braves over the past 13 years.

He is survived by his wife, Joni, and five children: Jim Jr., special assistant to the GM for the Kansas City Royals; Jennifer, Nicole, Robert, and Lexi.

 

Beginning his storied baseball career at the age of 19, Fregosi emerged as shortstop for the Los Angeles Angels, remaining with them for 11 seasons. He would go on to win a Golden Glove, as well as play for the MLB All-Star teams on six occasions. In total, Fregosi would last 18 seasons in the major leagues.

 

He was a beloved personality among his staff at Atlanta’s front-office as well as his fellow scouts and executives, with commissioner Bud Selig stating:

 

“I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jim Fregosi, who contributed to the success of our clubs for 53 years as an All-Star player with the Angels, a pennant-winning manager with the Phillies, a trusted scout with the Braves and many other capacities,”

 

The late manager’s son, Jim Fregosi Jr., said that his father, “Went in peace with no pain.”
