The BBC is celebrating the launch of their brand-new BBC Music, and what could possibly be better than a song to do that? The network managed to gather a very long list of A-list artists and music specialists to put together an Impossible Orchestra version of The Beach Boys’ “God Only Knows”.
The cover of the band’s 1966 classic tune finds The Beach Boys’ very own Brian Wilson leading the team, as he’s responsible for the composition and production of the original track. In this version, he’s joining forces with Sir Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Pharrell Williams, One Direction, Lorde, Kylie Minogue, Florence Welch, Emeli Sandé, Chris Martin, Geri Halliwell, Sam Smith and Paloma Faith. Rockers Chrissie Hynde, Brian May and Dave Grohl and classic artists, Alison Balsom, Martin James Bartlett, Danielle de Niese and Nicola Benedetti are also on board, along with Folk’s Eliza Karthy, Jazz’s Jamie Cullum, Baaba Maal from Senegal and British-Asian Jaz Dhami.
The track was simultaneously premiered by all media of the BBC network. Wilson said he felt honored that BBC chose his band’s song to launch BBC Music and coplimented the artists’ work on it. The accompanying visuals find the acts in vintage, tale-like Hollywood movie settings, with each and every one of them doing their thing. The Impossible Orchestra version of “God Only Knows” is now available for purchase and the earnings from it will be used in BBC’s Children In Need.
