Legendary actress of both Hollywood and Broadway Ruby Dee has passed away at the age of 89, a rep for her family has confirmed.
She was surrounded by her loved ones at her home in New Rochelle, NY.

Most famous for her roles in Raisin in the Sun, and Do The Right Thing, Ruby’s last big screen role was alongside Denzel Washington in American Gangster, which earned her an Oscar nomination.
Ruby was very active in the civil rights movement, often involved with Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X.
