Can you imagine a giant asteroid, the size of nearly three football fields, flying across the sky? Well imagine no more, this somewhat scary thought became a reality tonight.
But no worries, the asteroid missed the earth by 2 million miles and could barely even be spotted by the naked eye. Astronomer Bob Berman said, “The asteroid itself is “a little fainter than Pluto” and will show up as a white dot moving against the background of the stars” going on to say “that is, if we can find it.”
The asteroid was discovered in 2000 but when astronomers tried again to find it in 2006 and 2009, it had seemingly disappeared.
“The real story is this—here you have a potentially hazardous asteroid, but where the heck is it? Has its orbit been perturbed by a companion body or by passing too close to the sun?” said Berman “If we can’t even keep track of the ones we know about – I don’t even have to finish that sentence,”
The asteroid was available for view and live coverage on Slooh.com accompanied by astronomer commentary.
