Comics You Should Be Reading This Year

We’ve got comics with everything from Batman to hobos! Here are some great new comic book series available in the coming months that are worth checking out.

Every week, there are tons of comic books released, and it can be hard to decide which series are worth reading. Especially if you are new to comics, then it is even more difficult to find a issue you can just pick up and read. You can’t just start reading Detective Comics at issue #940 without any background reading. Here are some recommendations for new series coming out this year that are worth checking out.

Animal Noir

Comics IDW Publishing

From the publisher:

“Private Investigator (and giraffe), Immanuel Diamond – Manny to his friends – has been asked by his uncle – an influential judge — to track down a prey fantasy movie. Adult films in this world are staged hunts where one animal eats another and the judge’s wife starred in one that has been hidden (until now).

Giraffe detectives, hippo mob members, prey-obsessed lions, street fighting elephants, and oppressed zebras are just part of this wild animal kingdom.”

I’m on the fence about this series. The description doesn’t totally sell me on it. The story sounds a little too stereotypical noir, but the anthropomorphic animals have me intrigued. Animal Noir could be an interesting series or the same old classic noir stories with some new artwork. I think it is at least worth picking up the first issue to decide if it is for you or not. Animal Noir #1 will be published by IDW on March 1, 2017.

Man-Thing

Comics Marvel

From the publisher:

“Attempting to recreate the formula that produced Captain America, biochemist Ted Sallis was transformed into the shambling creature known only as MAN-THING! Now, having recently regained his ability to speak, Man-Thing sets out on a journey to leave the swamp once and for all. But when an ancient and mysterious danger threatens reality, he will have to choose between his new life and the place he once called home!”

Man-Thing is not typical of the comic books I read, but the thing that makes this series is the writer. Marvel has R.L. Stine writing this new Man-Thing series, on shelves March 8, 2017. Growing up loving the chilling Goosebumps stories from Stine makes this an instant buy. The issue will also include a special second story also written by Stine described as “terror on the high seas”. Check out a preview of the first issue here!

Iron Fist

Comics Marvel

From the publisher:

“K’un Lun is in ruins. The chi fueling Danny’s fists is wavering. Is there a future for the Iron Fist? Danny Rand pushes himself to the breaking point, finding fights to prove his worth. But a bigger fight than he can handle may have found him…”

The first issue of the new Iron Fist series comes out March 22, just five days after the Marvel’s Iron Fist premieres on Netflix. That’s plenty of time to binge watch the series and then get the comic to dive even deeper into the story of Danny Rand.

Orphan Black Deviations

Comics IDW Publishing

As the title suggests, this Orphan Black story is a deviation from the TV series. With the final season airing this summer, Orphan Black Deviations is sure to be some welcome new material with our favorite Clone Club. The comic tells the tale that would have happened if Sarah had saved Beth on the train platform that fateful day. I can’t wait to see Sarah and Beth wreaking havoc together. The first issue is available in comic book stores on March 29, 2017.

“In a world where Sarah managed to save Beth from taking her own life! With this single twist of fate, the Clone Club comes together in a completely different way and the mystery of Project LEDA unfolds in new, exiting ways! See all your favorite characters return in an all-new light!”

Rock Candy Mountain

Comics Image Comics

In stores April 5, Rock Candy Mountain is a new series written and illustrated by an Eisner-nominated creator Kyle Starks. For those new to comics, the Eisner Awards are the top honor of the comic book industry. Rock Candy Mountain‘s cover looks unassuming and not nearly as flashy as colorful superhero cover art, so you might overlook it. If you do, you’ll be missing out on “the magical world of hobos.”

From the publisher:

“The world’s toughest hobo is searching through post-World War II America for the mythological Rock Candy Mountain, and he’s going to have to fight his way to get there. Lots of hobo fights. So many hobo fights. A new action-comedy series full of high action, epic stakes, magic, friendships, trains, punching, kicking, joking, a ton of hobo nonsense, and the Literal Devil. Yeah. The Literal Devil.”

Starks’ previous comic series Sexcastle is being made into a movie by Fox. The film is being produced by the Russo brothers (Captain America: Civil War), directed by Workaholics‘ director Kyle Newacheck, and stars Blake Anderson (Workaholics). Rock Candy Mountain is your chance to get in on the ground level before Hollywood brings it to the mainstream. Also, hobo fights, c’mon.

Batman The Shadow

Comics DC Comics / Dynamite

Your heart is set on reading Batman, but you don’t know what issues to start with. Then check out the new six-issue comic series starting April 26, 2017. Batman is teaming up with The Shadow, a character originating in 1930s pulp novels who is often cited as the inspiration for Batman. Scott Snyder is co-writing the series, and he is one of the top Batman writers working today. Snyder is responsible for the Court of Owls storyline in The New 52 Batman series. DC Comics is also promising “a brand-new villain unlike any either hero has faced.” So, at the very least, the introduction of a new character is a good investment for your children. The first appearance of popular characters always draws in top dollar.

“Two of history’s greatest vigilantes are reunited at last! Murder has come to Gotham City, and Lamont Cranston appears to be the culprit…but he’s been dead for over fifty years! Batman will go to the ends of the Earth to unravel the mystery of Cranston’s life, but the mysterious Shadow will do everything in his power to stop him from learning too much…”

Other Series

Comics Marvel

Aside from these six series, there are a few other to watch out for. A new Batwoman series hits stores March 15, and I recommend following X-Men Blue when it starts April 12. Those reading All-New Wolverine know that X-23 has taken up the mantle in Logan’s wake. Word has it that Logan will be back, but you’ll need to read the X-Men Blue series to find out how. For now, we’ll just have to be satisfied with this tease of beautiful cover art from Issue 4.
