Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito” has broken another record! The single’s music video has now garnered more than 3 billion views on YouTube, making it the most viewed clip in the video sharing site’s history.
It was able to beat Whiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth’s “See You Again” music video, which had only climbed to the top last month. The song which was featured in the Furious 7 soundtrack, held the number one position for a mere 25 days, which isn’t really a short tenure. After all, it is still twice as long as Scaramucci’s term as White House Communications Director.
Former champion Psy’s “Gangnam Style”, which now sits in third place, still holds the record for being the most viewed YouTube video over the longest time period. It achieved that feat on November 24, 2012 and was toppled by “See You Again” on July 10 of this year, which means it held the top spot for more than four years.
“Despacito”, which translates to English as “Slowly”, is a Spanish song written by its performers, Puerto Ricans Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, together with Erika Ender and Ramon Ayala. In addition to its video currently being the YouTube most-viewed champion, it is also the first to hit the 3 billion mark on July 4. The single is also the most streamed song of all time with 4.6 billion streams.
Currently, it’s remix version featuring Justin Bieber is in its 12th week sitting on top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart, tying Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” record for the most weeks at No.1 for 2017!
There is a strong possibility that it could reach its 13th week, and hold the 2017 accolade on its own. For the all-time record it needs to stay on top for a month to reach Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s run with “One Sweet Day”, which remained at No.1 for 16 weeks.
In celebration of breaking the YouTube record, Luis Fonsi took to Instagram and posted a sample of the music video with inline titles celebrating the 3 billion views record. He captioned it with, “What an honor.. most viewed video in history and first video to reach 3 billion views…Thank you to everybody involved…Thank you, the fans for celebrating this song with us”
For his part, Daddy Yankee also posted a video in the social media site, in which he said, “Thank you YouTube for “Despacito”s success. I recognise the influence that the platform has. The music industry has changed. The rules of music have changed. And YouTube has a big responsibility, and I recognise it. Breaking the record is overwhelming, and I’m happy to keep (inspiring) others to do the same.”
