Dogs have been loyal companions to acting members of the military, and some have even served their country alongside their humans. Yet this is the first video showing one as a prisoner of war.
On Feb. 5, a Twitter account linked to Taliban propaganda posted a video of a Belgian Malinois surrounded by heavily armed (and heavily bearded) men. The short footage shows the not-so-terrified dog on a tight leash while one of the men says “Allah gave victory to the mujahideen! Down with them, down with their spies!”
A Taliban spokesperson, Zabiullah Mujahid, said the dog was captured during a firefight with U.S. forces in Afghanistan in December of last year. The International Security Assistance Force has confirmed that a military dog went missing last December.
The vested dog, named Colonel, was wearing a GPS tracking device and a small camera. It is possible that during the encounter in December, Colonel had been doing his job to either attack or search.
While he was captured during a firefight with U.S. forces, the BBC is reporting the dog belonged to a coalition partner in the British forces.
