This current season is coming to a close, just airing its last episode before returning for one episode on Christmas day in the UK. Fans of Downton Abbey have more to look forward to after the Christmas special! It has been officially announced that the U.K. drama will be returning for a fifth season.
Downton Abbey first made its debut in 2010 and year after year has provided its audience with family drama, death and romance set in the early 1900s. Since its debut on ITV it has garnered fans not only in the U.K., but all over the world including the U.S.
About 11.8 million viewers tuned in to the fourth season in the U.K. and in the U.S. the season 3 finale was the highest rated program of the night, watched by 24 million viewers.
Carnival Film’s Managing Director and Downton Abbey Executive Producer Gareth Neame explained a little of what viewers can expect to see next. “We promise all the usual highs and lows, romance, drama and comedy played out by some of the most iconic characters on television,” he said.
Season 4 of Downton Abbey will premiere in the U.S. on January 5, 2014, airing through February. However, if you are a viewer in the U.K., you can catch the final episode of Season 4 on Christmas day when it returns for its annual Christmas special. Shirley MacLaine is set to reprise her role as Martha Levinson and Oscar-nominated actor Paul Giamatti will be making his debut and I’m sure you wouldn’t want to miss it!
