Bleedingcool.com picked up new photos from the Twitter page of Anything Cumberbatch showing the alien otter prince himself, Benedict Cumberbatch, in full costume as Doctor Strange, the titular film of which hits theaters on November 4, 2016.
For those unfamiliar with the surgeon-sorcerer, Dr. Stephen Vincent Strange first appeared in Marvel’s Strange Tales #110 in 1963. Brilliantly skilled yet materialistic and cold, Strange’s rapid accumulation of wealth and prestige in the field of neurosurgery is juxtaposed against a series of family and personal tragedies that lead him in desperation to search for the Ancient One, who ends up guiding him through the study of sorcery. The Ancient One’s former protege, Baron Mordo, serves as one of the many foes Strange repeatedly faces in between counseling other heroes of the Marvel universe such as the Fantastic Four and the Avengers. Unfortunately, he could not convince the former group to stop having their story adapted to film.
I love Cumberbatch as Strange. He has the build, the hair. Cloak, collar, cheekbones, EYEBROWS: flawless. Plus, his voice has the perfect timbre for Strange: thick, resonant, and wickedly posh. Acceptable as good but made for bad, like Jeremy Irons with a touch of George Sanders in All About Eve. Remember the scene in Adaptation where his character gives Juno Temple’s teenage imp a chocolate bar and tells her “I want you to bite it”? If he repeats that line in Doctor Strange, I will give it all the A’s.
With Chiwetel Ejiofor as Mordo and the insanely fantastic Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One, this should be fun.
