We first fell in love with North Carolina funny girl Fortune Feimster as a finalist on NBC’s Last Comic Standing. Then she landed into a series regular on Chelsea Lately and After Lately; unfortunately they were both cancelled last year.
Fortune sat down with us and let us know how she felt about the cancellation. Feimster explained, “I miss Chelsea Lately. It was a unique show that people loved and we got paid to laugh with our friends. It doesn’t get much better than that. But I’ll always be grateful to Chelsea for giving me a job. She took a chance on comedians that other people were overlooking at the time. It definitely was a big break for me and gave me the kind of platform I had never had before. And how many times in your life can you say that you got to impersonate Honey Boo Boo and Khloe Kardashian?!”
Fortunately for us, Fortune has a new project in the works with fellow funny lady Tina Fey. She gave us an exclusive scoop on filming the pilot for Family Fortune, “Things are great lately. I’m on the road doing standup and I just shot my own TV pilot for ABC. It’s based on my standup and my family. Tina Fey is producing it so it’s been a dream come true. We don’t know the fate of the show yet but just getting the opportunity to shoot the pilot was something I will remember for the rest of my life. Plus, watching Tina and her fellow writers in action was like being in a master class. I learned so much from this experience. I also saw what a hard worker Tina is and it showed me that success doesn’t come easy. You have to be willing to put in the work.”
Family Fortune is based on the family life and stand-up of Feimster, who grew up in Belmont, N.C. Written by Hubbard and Feimster, it centers on popular gym teacher in North Carolina (Feimster) who comes out of the closet to her close-knit group of family and friends. It will also star John Carroll and the absolute woman of Designing Women herself, Annie Potts. You can be looking out for it this Fall on ABC.
Being from her home state of North Carolina, and understanding the heart of southern family values, I asked her how her family felt about the show, and being part of the story lines. Feimster, “My family is super excited about the show. We’ve always felt like we were odd but we’re also relatable. Our family goes through things that everyone’s family goes through and there’s something comforting about seeing it played out on television in a humorous way. I think we have tons of great stories to tell so hopefully we get the chance. I know my mom is hoping so too because she’s ready for me to pay her bills! Haha!”
Fortune is also currently filming Comedy Central’s newest scripted show Idiotsitter with creators Jillian Bell and Charlotte Newhouse. You guys are gonna flip out over this show!
As if that isn’t enough, she is also performing her hilarious stand up at the Ventian’s historic Lipshtick Lounge in Las Vegas – and you can find the info HERE! But ultimately the easiest way to find her wherever in the world she happens to be, whether that be on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, is to plug into her official website.
Fortune will soon enough be a household name, and we were honored we got to spend some time with this rising star. Stay tuned, PopWrappers!
