Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek Floppy Disks Decrypted

The information on nearly 200 floppy disks belonging to Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry’s estate has been recovered and decrypted.

There were 200 floppy disks belonging to the creator of Star Trek found this year. Gene Roddenberry, the creator, made his cult sci-fi creation successful for many years. 2016 is the year that marks the 50th anniversary of these popular films. What no one knew was there  were disks that have never been shown to the public. Never did fans think they could see more Star Trek episodes.

Since the disks are from decades ago, they will be hard to process now. Paul Sawers wrote an article in VentureBeat.com, explaining how the disks were created. He said:

Having initially created scripts and notes for Star Trek on a  typewriter, Roddenberry, who died in 1991, later switched to using custom-made computers. There were two in total, one of which no longer works and one that had been auctioned a long time ago. Ordinarily, this wouldn’t pose a problem given that the information was stored on the floppy disks — but Roddenberry’s computers also had their own special operating systems and word processing software.

These disks won’t all work out because of the new technology out there today. If all the disks are able to be accessed and have exciting footage, they could be used to create more episodes for the upcoming years. Not many people know what is on the newly found disks, but Mike Cobb, director of engineering at DriveSavers, does. He confirmed that they found “lots” of documents, but wasn’t able to share any specifics, likely due to a confidentiality agreement. Cobb did leave fans with a cryptic comment, saying that since 2016 “just happens to be the 50th anniversary…anything could happen, the world will have to wait and see.”

There will be a new Star Trek film, Star Trek Beyond coming out on July 22nd, 2016. This film is the next step to a revival of this hit cult-science-fiction television series with more to come. Who knows what new surprises will be found on the Star Trek creator’s disks? As Cobb says,  we will just have to wait and see!
