Girl Radical’s Jimmy Harry Wins Big at the 2014 Canadian Screen Awards

The best in Canada’s film, television and digital media industries were honored at the second annual Canadian Screen Awards gala on March 9, 2014. Canadian comedian, Martin Short, hosted the 2-hour event, which was held at the prestigious Sony Center for the Performing Arts in Toronto. The celebration marks the end of Canadian Screen Week, which is an “all-encompassing celebration of Canadian film, television and digital media with 10 engaging events over 7 days.”

During a non-televised afternoon gala on March 9, awards were presented in nearly two-dozen categories.

Jimmy Harry, the co-creator of super group Girl Radical, was one of the afternoon’s big winners, taking home the award for best original song with Serena Ryder, for It’s No Mistake (from The Right Kind of Wrong). Jimmy Harry, who is best known for his work with Madonna, P!nk, Kylie Minogue and Kelly Clarkson, is an American Golden Globe Award-winning and Grammy-nominated producer, composer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist.

The action-adventure film The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones won the Golden Reel Award. Below is a list of some of the major awards that were distributed during the Sunday afternoon gala.

Actor in a continuing leading dramatic role: Hugh Dillon for his role in FlashpointFit for Duty.

Actor in a leading role in a dramatic program or miniseries: Rick Roberts for his role in Jack.

Adapted screenplay: The F-Word.

Animated short: Subconscious Password.

Art direction/production design: Louis Cyr: The Strongest Man in the World.

Claude Jutra Award: Emanuel Hoss-Desmarais

Costume design: Louis Cyr: The Strongest Man in the World.

Host in a variety, lifestyle, reality/competition, performing arts or talk program/series: Michael Bublé for The 2013 Juno Awards.

Live action short: Noah.

Music – original song: It’s No Mistake (from The Right Kind of Wrong), by Serena Ryder and Jimmy Harry.

Original screenplay: Empire of Dirt.

Short documentary: Chi.

The televised ceremony on Sunday evening included presentations of best film, drama series, and comedy series. There was also a special tribute to filmmaker David Cronenberg, recipient of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Cronenberg is known as one of the primary creators of what is commonly referred to as the body horror or venereal horror genre.
