Science fiction and horror fans have some new content to look forward to, as Guillermo del Toro has signed a new deal with Fox Searchlight that not only applies to his future projects, but also includes the creation of a new label under the Fox Searchlight umbrella.
Though the label’s name has not yet been announced, the focus will be on horror, science fiction, and fantasy—not at all surprising considering the massive success of The Shape of Water. Del Toro’s new projects will fall under this new label, and in a public statement, the filmmaker had this to say:
For the longest time, I've hoped to find an environment in which I can distribute, nurture and produce new voices in smart, inventive genre films and channel my own. In Fox Searchlight, I've found a real home for live action production, a partnership based on hard work, understanding of each other and, above all, faith. After the wonderful experience I had with Fox Searchlight on The Shape of Water, I am honored to have the opportunity to continue the relationship.
Projects for the new label are already under way, including Scott Cooper’s Antlers, a film based on the short story “The Quiet Boy,” which will be produced by del Toro himself. No casting or production has started on the film yet, but the heads of Fox Searchlight have made it clear that everyone involved is greatly looking forward to this new project and the upcoming genre initiatives from the studio.
