Period drama, Downton Abbey, is reported to be shooting scenes at Alnwick castle. For those of you unfamiliar with the significance of this place, the castle is well known for being the setting for Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the first two Harry Potter films.

An announcement was posted on the castle’s website which reads: “Please note that various areas of Alnwick Castle will be closed or have limited access on July 28–August 8 (inclusive), due to the filming of a major ITV period drama.”

The castle dates back to the 14th century and is the residence of the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland. The Duke has given a statement to the local newspaper about a famous ITV period drama without mentioning the actual show. “As we know from experience, filming somewhere like Alnwick Castle can be very disruptive, but when we received ITV’s enquiry, my wife and I felt that we could not miss the opportunity for the castle and town to be associated with such a hugely popular drama series, and we consider it a great honour to be asked to participate.” the statement of the Duke reads.

Aside from Harry Potter other major feature films shot in the keep are, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves which starred Kevin Costner, and the historical biopic Elizabeth which starred Cate Blanchett.
