Viva La Vie Boheme! It looks like upcoming new Broadway show If/Then will be a Rent reunion of sorts.
Anthony Rapp is set to join Idina Menzel in the new Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey, musical. Fun fact, this is the same pair behind Pulitzer Prize winning Next To Normal. If/Then will have a Washington, D.C premiere this fall before heading to Broadway in 2014, reports Playbill.
Producers say that Rapp will play the role of Lucas, “An old college friend of Elizabeth (Menzel), who reconnects with her when she moves back to New York City,” according to Playbill.
LaChanze will star alongside Menzel and Rapp as Kate, “an elementary school teacher and new neighbor of Elizabeth.” Menzel will play Elizabeth, a woman on the verge of 40 who moves to New york to get a fresh start. This highlights Menzel’s first return back to the great white way since her 2003 Tony award winning performance in Wicked.
If/Then will be shepherded by Wicked and Next to Normal producer, David Stone, and directed by Michael Greif. Greif’s directing credits include Next to Normal and Rent. It seems like one big circle of Rent, Next To Normal, and Wicked amongst the cast and crew. Might as well keep it all in the family right? Plus, this is a group is super talented directors, producers, and actors, so we can only infer this show will be incredible.
The show has been advertised as follows:
“
On the verge of turning 40, Elizabeth moves back to New York City, the ultimate city of possibility, intent on a fresh start – new home, new friends, and hopes for a resurgent career. But even in her carefully planned new life, the smallest decision or most random occurrence will impact her world in ways she never dreamt possible. Set against the ever-shifting landscape of modern day Manhattan, If/Then is a romantic and original new musical about how choice and chance collide and how we learn to love the fallout.
”
If/Then will premiere at Washington, DC’s National Theatre Nov. 5-Dec. 8. It will officially open Nov. 24. Subsequently, it will start Broadway previews March 4, 2014, and will have its big premiere March 27, 2014, at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.
