Jeremy Renner Exits ‘Mission Impossible 6’

Superman must have frightened William Brandt off! Jeremy Renner is out of the next impossible mission in the famous Tom Cruise spy film series.

After just hearing that Mr. Henry Cavill will be joining Mission: Impossible 6 (2018), we have now also recently heard someone is leaving it, confirmed by Slash Film: Jeremy Renner, who co-starred in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011) and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015) as William Brandt.

While this is a bit of sad news, it does not deteriorate our excitement for the next Mission installment, and in actuality, is not all that surprising. While the introduction of Renner’s character in Ghost Protocol was interesting and mysteriously exciting, providing a provocative foil and dichotomy to Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt, his character sort of got pushed to the backseat in the next film, Rogue Nation. This was unfortunate, although it is hard to have too many characters, and Tom Cruise really does take precedence in these films. Of course, Henry Cavill might be an ideal replacement for a role like Jeremy Renner’s.

Don’t worry about Renner, though. He has plenty to keep him busy, and you’ll soon be seeing more of him on that big screen. It turns out the main reason for him not being a part of the next spy film is due to Marvel Cinematic Universe obligations and scheduling. After all, aside from being a Mission: Impossible and Bourne Legacy (2012) star, Renner right now is probably most known for his arrow-firing hero, Hawkeye. Slash Film says that besides Renner’s expected return for the big superhero casted Avengers: Infinity War (2018) next summer on May 4, 2018, he might also play a role in Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018) also next summer on July 6, 2018.

We are sorry to see Mr. Renner escape from the Mission: Impossible franchise, but maybe William Brandt is not through yet, providing this next mission is not the last, and that the writers don’t write his character out entirely because of this scheduling conflict. You can see Jeremy Renner late this summer on August 4, 2017 in Wind River (2017) along with Elizabeth Olsen and Jon Bernthal, which premiered at Sundance in January of this year. It is scripted by Sicario (2015) and Hell or High Water (2016) writer Taylor Sheridan.

Mission: Impossible 6 is still untitled at this time (at least the second half of the title), and will star Tom Cruise, Rebecca Ferguson, Henry Cavill, Sian Brooke, and Vanessa Kirby, and a now confirmed return of Alec Baldwin and Simon Pegg to that roster. Directed again by Christopher McQuarrie (Rogue Nation), the next sequel is expected to hit theaters July 27, 2018.
