Jesse Tyler Ferguson has donated $10,000 to support marriage equality in Australia.

The actor, who will film an upcoming episode for his hit TV show Down Under, wrote, “Like many marriage equality advocates we were saddened to hear that Australia’s High Court recently overturned the law that legalized same sex marriage in their great country.”

The Modern Family star, who married Justin Mikita in 2012, continued: “Newlyweds ourselves, Justin and I kept thinking how devastated we would have been if suddenly we were no longer recognized as a legal couple.”

The law that Ferguson is referring to (the ACT Marriage Equality (Same Sex) Act) was passed in the Australian Capital Territory, a small region of Australia that hosts its capital, Canberra, by 9 votes to 8 in October of last year. The law came into effect on the November 7 with same-sex couples then allowed to marry a month from then after giving the legally required notice of intention to marry. Around 27 couples took advantage of the law before it was struck down and their unions declared void by the Australian High Court five days later.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson wrote on his Tie the Knot foundation’s website: “Tie The Knot has always focused its efforts on marriage equality in the United States, but there is no doubt in my mind that this is a great opportunity to bring attention to the journey toward marriage equality that Australia is currently embarking on. We have great faith in their strength and perseverance… so much so I am personally pledging $10,000 toward the marriage equality efforts in Australia.”

He added: “This fight isn’t a quick one in the United States, and it won’t be in Australia either. But together we can make a difference!”
