Legendary comedy-movie director Judd Apatow has revealed how much male frontal nudity an audience can really handle. In an interview at Loyola Marymount University on March 12, he explained his rule for how much screen  an actor’s “man parts” can have before putting it away.

“We’ve experimented with the limits of what people can handle. We’ve had a male organ in movies. We found out that 20 seconds of someone naked is probably too much, and people will leave the theatre if you have full frontal nudity for an extended period of time. But if you make it five seconds they’ll laugh and say it was great. So basically that’s the ratio of how much penis people can handle in a movie. Five seconds yes, 20 seconds no,” he said referring to his old body of work.

Apatow also revealed HBO had to lay down some ground rules after he wanted to put some concerning footage into his television show Girls, which he also produces. “If we put this on TV, we literally could lose our licence to broadcast” he said, explaining his discussion with HBO. When pressed on what kind of scene it was, Apatow tactfully replied “Let’s just say it’s something you see in adult films.”
