Karen Gillan Is Making Her U.S.-Based TV Debut In ‘Selfie’

Most recognizable for her role the eleventh doctor’s sassy companion, Amy Pond, Karen Gillan is now poised to make her American n television debut in the ABC comedy pilot, Selfie.

The show comes from Suburgatory creator Emily Kapnek and from Warner Bros. Television. Selfie tells the story of a woman, Eliza Dooley (Gillan) who is “more concerned with ‘likes’ than being liked.” When an ugly breakup leads to Eliza becoming the subject of a viral video, she realizes that social media notoriety isn’t so great if you’re famous for the wrong reasons. To-wit, she enlists the help of a marketing expert to help her rebuild her image.”

If the concept of the show sounds at all familiar think to the Broadway stage and the story of My Fair Lady‘s Eliza Doolittle. Miss Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl, enlists the help of phoneticist Henry Higgins to work on a her speech so she can pass as a well-born lady.

Emily Kapnek is tapped to executive produce the half-hour, single camera comedy; she will also pen the pilot episode. The director’s chair for Selfie will be filled by Anne Robinson who has directed some popular shows over the years, including Weeds, Grey’s Anatomy and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

If you are a big Karen Gillan fan and cannot wait to see her in Selfie in the fall, you are in luck! Karen has three films coming out this year. One is a rom-com from Harris Goldberg entitled The List which doesn’t have a set release date yet, but will be out some point in 2014. If horror films are more you style, make sure you watch Gillan in Mike Flanagan’s Oculus due out in the next few months. Finally, there is this film entitled Guardians Of The Galaxy where Karen is playing the character of Nebula. This movie is kind of a big deal so I think a couple of people will go see it.

Since Selfie is based on a musical (based on a book, for those keeping track) I wonder if Karen will be recruited to sing at some point. Maybe the people at Selfie saw her perform ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ with Matt Smith and Arthur Darvill at SDCC.
