Last Week Tonight released an educational web exclusive just in time for back to school. While the show is still on hiatus, they released a video to help students prepare for the upcoming school year. Host John Oliver then gave viewers a crash course in a few of the more popular school subjects.
Oliver began with History, where he highlighted Warren G. Harding’s love life as the only topic of importance. This is not something students are likely to learn in school, so Oliver advised they turn to Google, with safe search off.
Students will also about the exciting “adventures” of European “explorers” and “colonists”. Oliver cautions students that as adults, they’ll come to the realization that those explorers and colonists were really just “genocidal lunatics” and advises them to enjoy the tales while they can.
When discussing Math, Oliver very accurately points out that most adults with jobs will never need to know much more than the “original fab four” – addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Chemistry is largely forgettable, unless of course the teacher is a Breaking Bad fan. He also introduced viewers to his regrettably fake John Oliver’s Guide To Who Dies At The End, a wonderful crash course in various literary works.
