The live-action Disney adaptations continue! In addition to Aladdin and The Little Mermaid, we can now look forward to…Lady and the Tramp?
So, in what I can only assume would be more along the lines of the recent Jungle Book adaptation, combining live action with CGI, this new version of Lady and the Tramp won’t actually be hitting theatres, but will instead be making it’s debut on Disney’s streaming platform sometime in 2019. Which is probably for the best, because while I know everyone is at least talking about which classic Disney tales should be retold…Lady and the Tramp isn’t exactly on anyone’s list. At least, I don’t think it is.
But that doesn’t mean it won’t be an interesting watch. It was announced earlier this week that Charlie Bean, director the Lego Ninjago movie, was signing on for the project and that the film is actually a priority for the new streaming service’s launch, so clearly Disney thinks this story of canine opposites attracting over their mutual love of spaghetti--look, it’s been a while, okay--will be a successful draw for new subscribers.
Alongside Bean, Brigham Taylor—who previously worked on The Jungle Book—has signed on to co-direct, and and Andrew Bujalski is writing the script. With the behind the camera team coming together quickly, I’m sure we’ll be hearing cast announcements soon. So if the idea of a Lady and the Tramp adaptation is something you’re actually super into and you’re wondering why I’m being such a cynical jerk right now, well…stay tuned! More news is on the way.
