Mad Max Sequel May Not Include Fan Favorite Furiosa

Director George Miller opens up about the upcoming mad max sequel and the possibility of Charlize Theron returning as Imperator Furiosa.

If you are a fan of the 2015 film Mad Max: Fury Road, I have some mixed news to share with you. The director of the Mad Max film series has been opening up slightly more about the upcoming sequel (initially) titled Mad Max: Wasteland. Earlier this month the director/writer announced that there were two possible Mad Max films down the pipeline with potential for the sequel’s script, but hadn’t spoken about who may return aside from the titular character played by Tom Hardy. In a new interview with DigitalSpy, Miller finally addressed what myself and many others wondered… Will Imperator Furiosa make a return to the Mad Max universe?

“I’m not sure, is the answer,” Miller tells the website, “She’s not in the Mad Max [sequel] story, but in one of the stories there’s an interaction between [Max and Furiosa]. I can’t really say more than that because it’s still in progress.” Miller also states in the interview that Wasteland isn’t actually a finalized title, but one of two Mad Max film projects still in development. In the recent film, Miller created a new character capable of holding the weight of an action franchise and an instant feminist icon, so it’s understandable as to why people have been so curious about her involvement in a future story.

My takeaway from Mad Max: Fury Road, was that although Furiosa (played by the astute Charlize Theron) successfully concluded a chapter of her story, there was still many aspects of Furiosa yet to be seen, and still plenty of both past and future storytelling to explore through the Mad Max films. (Or even possibly a standalone film hopefully?)

The next Mad Max movie is still in early discussions, but after Fury Road received such critical acclaim from viewers and critics I truly hope something can be worked out to reunite the two essential characters onscreen; and I’m now wracking my brain as to what this interaction that Miller hinted at could actually involve? What are your thoughts, do you hope Furiosa will return to Mad Max in the future?
