Black Widow is one of the first of the original roster of Avengers to appear on-screen. She made her debut in 2010's Iron Man 2 ahead of Captain America, Thor, and her best friend and fellow assassin Hawkeye.
She has proven herself indispensable to the team and so far has appeared in five films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And yet despite the star power of Scarlett Johansson, the popularity of the character and her status as the first female Avenger in the franchise, she has yet to have her own solo film. But now it seems that the leadership at Marvel Studios are now willing to give fans what they have been waiting for and are moving forward with a Black Widow solo feature!
It is still in the early stages of development, and it has not yet been officially greenlit for production, although they already hired Jac Schaeffer to write the screenplay, and Variety reports that Marvel executives have already met with Johansson to discuss their vision for the project.
It has been a long time coming and as fans, we of course have a few things we'd like to see in the Russian spy/superhero's solo film:
1. The Red Room And Julie Delpy as Madame B.
This was something we caught a glimpse of in Avengers: Age of Ultron and those few moments were amazing and intriguing and frankly too short. We want to know more of Black Widow's past and how she became the assassin the she is. Also it seems such a waste of talent to see Julie Delpy as Madame B. for only a few seconds.
2. It Doesn't Have To Be Laden With Superheroes
Netflix's The Punisher was able to prove that down to earth and grounded action has a place in an interconnected universe filled with superheroes and villains. Marvel could do a film version of that, this would set Black Widow apart and make her unique from the other movies that came before. Remove the superpowers and advance technology and just make it a raw character-driven action film. And if there are superhumans that would be featured keep it minimal, but still...
3. Give The Winter Soldier A Small Cameo
Black Widow mentioned an encounter she had against the Winter Solider in the second Captain America film. Although she did say that they considered him a "ghost story" there is an important scene in Civil War wherein Natasha while fighting Bucky Barnes said, "You could at least recognize me!" which shows a level of familiarity. There may be more to their history than we know we'd like to see that addressed. Just don't make it too central to the action, make it short and sweet, as the focus should still be on Natasha.
4. A Female Partner
No, not a romantic pairing, I mean a female comrade-in-arms. She was trained in the all-female red room surely she'd have to work with one of them!
5. Her Dark Side
We first encountered her as a superhero, but we know that she had a checkered past. Seeing a more ruthless Black Widow would be very interesting, the movie could even be flipped wherein she is the villain and she triumphs in the end. That would make for a very edgy story, the likes of which we have never seen before in a comic book superhero tale.
6. The Origin Of Her Name
Her last name is Romanoff, which is close to the Romanovs, the last ruling dynasty of the Russian empire. Could she be royalty? We'd like to know.
So are you excited about the idea of a solo Black Widow film? Do you agree with the list of things we'd like to see in the movie?
