DC has officially announced that Justice League Dark will be its next animated film, and Matt Ryan is set to reprise his role as John Constantine in the release.
The team is composed of the supernatural heroes and anti-heroes of the DC universe who would often deal with things of a similar nature.
For this animated adaptation the roster will include Swamp Thing, Zatanna, Deadman, Etrigan, and Black Orchid. John Constantine, just like in the comics, will act as the leader of the group. Batman is set to make an appearance alongside some other members of the Justice League, who will take on a minor role in the upcoming adaptation.
It is a major success for this animated feature to have been able land Matt Ryan for Constantine. After all, he was the one who played the British magician for thirteen episodes on NBC’s Constantine. The character also made a recent appearance in an episode of Arrow, which officially connects his story line to the larger DC television universe known as Flarrowverser to fans. Let us hope that all this renewed interest for his part may lead to CW picking up the series just like they did for Supergirl.
The DC announcement comes in the form of a special featurette on the Killing Joke disc. It shows an introduction to the team, delivers a behind the scenes sneak peek, and shares interviews with the cast and crew including Matt Ryan.
“I really wanted to jump into this project to play Constantine in a different context, around some of the iconic characters that are in the DC ‘dark’ world,” he says on the featurette.
“We were able to line up Matt Ryan who plays Constantine on Tv, he really was Constantine to me” says Mike Carlin, Creative Director for DC Animation Studios.
Justice League Dark is scheduled be released this fall.
