A military wife had a surprise in store for her husband when he returned home from his year long deployment in Afghanistan.
Misty and Larry Shaffer met in high school and have been together ever since. Misty had always struggled with her weight. She had often tried diet pills but each time the weight returned, often times more returned than what she had lost. At her heaviest, she weighed almost 300 pounds.
When Larry was set to deploy for a year, Misty made a choice that would change her life. She told CNN that she made the decision one night before going to sleep. “I just sat in bed one night and was like, ‘I can do this. I need to do this,’” she said.
When Shaffer’s husband returned on May 15, 2013, she was proud of her accomplishment. She was also elated that her husband, who he had never been able to before, could now pick her up.
“A lot of people look at it like, ‘Why is that such a big deal?’” she said. “But (when) you never thought you’d see that moment, that somebody can pick you up… it is a big deal.”
Shaffer credits her weight loss to no longer eating when she was bored, as well as cutting out junk food. She also tried to stop eating based on her emotions. “I would eat when I was bored. I’d eat three huge meals a day, and then snack in between. Sad or happy, I’d turn to food for everything,” said Shaffer.
Almost a year later, Shaffer has been able to keep the weight off and is enjoying her new healthy lifestyle.
