A new family may be moving onto ABC. The news first broke on Deadline that the mega-hit Modern Family might be getting a spin-off. Will the Emmy-winning show get an offshoot? We will just have to wait and see! For now, here is what we know.
A lot of things are up in the air; nothing is set in stone. Discussions are in early stages. Ideas are still being thrown around. Things can change (as they often do).
Co-creator/executive producer Steven Levitan as well as co-executive producers Paul Corrigan and Brad Walsh are going to be behind this possible series. It seems that the show-runners want to create a show around Rob Riggle’s Gil Thorp.
This character plays a minor role in Modern Family, although he did interact with both Phil and Claire Dunphy. Deemed “southern California’s most successful real estate agent,” he is the rival of Phil. Gil was also the employer of Claire for a little while.
We have not really gotten to know Gil. After all, he has been in only in two episodes of the series. However, what we saw was something else. He is abrasive and annoying. Case in point, he adores slipping his name into words (“Thorpedoed,” anyone? Hello, Mr. “Gil Pickles”). Gil also name-drops and even interrupts classroom presentations. It seems like he could be a pretty compelling character to follow in a new series.
To get a little sneak-peak of the next comedic lead, here is a special clip for the episode “Career Day”:

Would you watch a show based on Gil Thorpe? Will this show be the next hit or a big flop?
