Patty Jenkins Not Yet Confirmed For Wonder Woman Sequel

Despite the historic opening of Wonder Woman, a sequel is not in the works yet.

Before Wonder Woman was released, experts were predicting an opening of about $65 million for the second film directed by Patty Jenkins. But to everyone’s surprise, the film has grossed more than $103 million dollars. This has been such a surprise that there have not even been discussions of a sequel. Usually this is a easy decision for such a highly acclaimed movie, but will DC secure Jenkins as the director?

At Warner Bros, it is said signing on for a one-picture-only deal is custom for someone directing their first big-budget film. Apparently, executives are very surprised by the success given the low-ball estimate of opening weekend numbers. The studio has been focusing on putting together ideas for their upcoming films Justice League Dark, a superhero team-up story, and Batgirl¸ a Joss Whedon-helmed film.

Hollywood is reeling from the film’s success as it is the first woman lead superhero movie, as well as the first major film directed by a woman. Marvel has not even crossed these thresholds yet, as they have only had a woman co-direct a big hit movie. These milestones have critics and audiences alike praising the breakthrough, but also asking why it has taken so long from any major studio.

People did not begin buzzing about Wonder Woman until the final weeks approaching the film’s release. Once a few people began commenting, the hype quickly built around the movie and Warner says they wanted to wait for discussions regarding a sequel until they saw what would happen opening weekend. Under previous pretenses, Warner has not waited to pull the trigger on sequels, as they famously okayed the sequel to The Hangover two months before the initial release of the first movie.

The film left a lot to the imagination, with a large time gap between the defeat of Ares and Wonder Woman’s involvement with Wayne enterprises. There is no doubt that theaters will eagerly fill up once again to see the next instalment of Diana Price’s story.
