Popaween: 10 Of The Best Horror Comedies To Stream On Halloween

It’s 13 Days Of Popaween and we have a list of 10 of the best streaming movies to make you laugh and scream this Halloween!

Sometimes, the best way to spend Halloween is at home with some good food and good company. Whether you’re having over a group of your closest friends, spending the night cuddling on the couch with your honey or flying solo, the best way to round out the night is with movies that will make you scream with laughter. And we’ve rounded up some of the best horror comedies available for streaming. Everything from possession to vampires, werewolves and zombies; there is a huge selection of incredible movies all available to stream!

1. Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn (1987) – Starring Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams, this old gem is set in a spooky cabin in the woods and features more fake blood than any movie you have ever seen. Don’t worry, if you haven’t already seen the first Evil Dead, you won’t be lost. The opening of the Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn brings you up to speed nicely. ED2 features plenty of gore and slapstick taking several tips from the Three Stooges. This movie will make you laugh and squeal with delight as Ash fights off the relentless pursuit of the deadites with his chainsaw and trusty boomstick! And if you get the Starz network, don’t forget to check out the series premiere of Ash Vs. The Evil Dead on Halloween night! Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn is available to stream on Amazon.

2. Shaun Of The Dead (2004) –  Before zombie fever really hit pop culture hard with The Walking Dead and World War Z, there was the brilliant zombie comedy from the UK, Shaun Of The Dead. Directed by Edgar Wright (Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World) the movie stars Simon Pegg as Shaun, a retail salesman who has lost his girlfriend and most of his ambition in life. When people start returning from the dead to chomp down on human flesh, Shaun and his hapless roommate, Ed (Nick Frost), set out to win back Shaun’s girlfriend and find a safe place to hide and wait out the zombie apocalypse. The practical effects are fantastic with plenty of blood and guts, hilariously choreographed fight sequences and lines you’ll be quoting for days. Shaun Of The Dead is available for streaming through Amazon.

3. Tucker And Dale Vs. Evil (2011) – This movie puts a different twist on the cabin-in-the-woods trope and the result is a bloody good time! Starring Alan Tudyk (Firefly) as Tucker and Tyler Labine (Deadbeat) as Dale, two Southern good-ol boys heading to their new cabin in the woods to spend some quality time and fix the place up for summer vacations and fishing trips. A group of college kids staying nearby (having seen too many horror movies), assume the country boys are killers. The kids decide to take matters into their own hands and launch an attack on Tucker and Dale and things get very bloody, very fast. The movie is, at times, a little ridiculous but it is non-stop fun! You will laugh and cringe out loud so make sure you make plenty of popcorn for this one! Tucker And Dale Vs. Evil is available for streaming on Netflix and Amazon.

4. Slither (2006) – Written and directed by James Gunn (Guardians Of The Galaxy), Slither is the story of a small town overrun by alien slugs that take over human bodies and attack the uninfected. Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Castle) stars as the sheriff trying desperately to save himself and the town before all is lost. Co-starring Elizabeth Banks, Gregg Henry and Michael Rooker, Slither is a modern sci-fi/horror B-movie that you will want to watch over and over again. Slither is available to stream on Amazon.

5. Idle Hands (1999) – Idle Hands is about a teen-aged slacker (Devon Sawa) whose hand is suddenly possessed by an evil force and goes on a murderous rampage. Seth Green (Robot Chicken) and Elden Henson (Marvel’s Daredevil) play his stoner best friends and both turn in amazingly funny performances that will have you wanting more of those two onscreen. Jessica Alba co-stars as the cute next-door neighbor and love-interest. And keep an eye on her at the school dance; you get to see her do a rather hilarious (if unintentional) impression of an inflatable arm flailing tube man. But before you watch Idle Hands, try to watch Evil Dead 2 and you’ll see how much influence Sawa took from Bruce Campbell in his performance. Overall, Idle Hands is one of my favorite 90’s teen movies and easily surpasses most of the horror movies from that era for entertainment value. Idle Hands is available to rent on Amazon.

6. What We Do In The Shadows (2014) – From Jemaine Clement (Flight Of The Conchords) and Taika Waititi (Eagle Vs. Shark) comes this documentary-style film about a trio of vampires living together as roommates on the outskirts of Wellington, New Zealand. The three vampires are doing their best to cope with modern society and experience the typical problems most roommates have like dividing up household chores and trying to get into the coolest nightclubs. What We Do In The Shadows is easily one of the best horror comedies to hit the screen in years and is the perfect addition to your Halloween viewing party! What We Do In The Shadows is available to rent on i-Tunes and for purchase on Amazon.

7. The Cabin In The Woods (2012) – Five college kids head off to a cabin in the woods for a raucous good time only to be attacked by a stream of supernatural creatures. Sound like it’s been done before? Well, not like this, it hasn’t. Written by Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard (who also directed the film), this isn’t like any cabin film you  have ever seen before, I promise. Every time you think you know what’s going to happen, you’re surprised again. There are twists and turns aplenty and this is a film that will have you howling with laughter one second and shouting with fear the next. The cast sports a plethora of familiar faces from the Whedonverse including Amy Acker (Angel), Tom Lenk (Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog) and Fran Kranz (Dollhouse) as well as Chris Hemsworth (Avengers), Bradley Whitford (The West Wing) and Richard Jenkins (Six Feet Under).  The Cabin In The Woods is available to rent on Amazon and i-tunes.

8. Knights Of Badassdom (2013) – Ryan Kwanten (True Blood), Steve Zahn (Reality Bites) and Peter Dinklage (Game Of Thrones) star in this goofy tale of a group of LARPers (Live Action Role Players) who unwittingly unleash a succubus from hell on the unsuspecting players in a fictional battle for the realm. The film also stars Summer Glau (Firefly, Serenity) as a badass LARPer who can wield a sword with the best of them. The group must fight evil for real as they attempt to kill the succubus and save their comrades. The movie is really hilarious and at times, really bad. But it is an hour and a half of pure entertainment and fantastic performances. This movie is pure cheese at its finest. Knights Of Badassdom is available to stream on Netflix and you can rent it from i-tunes and Amazon.

9. Zombieland (2009) – After the world descends into a zombie apocalypse, four survivors reluctantly band together to stay alive and make their way across the country to Los Angeles. The film stars Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network) as Columbus, the nerd whose unlikely survival rests on a simple set of rules he has in place for himself. Woody Harrelson (The Hunger Games) is Tallahassee, a man on a never-ending quest for the last Twinkie. And Emma Stone (Easy A) and Abigail Breslin (Scream Queens) are sisters, hustling everyone they cross and trusting no one in order to survive. This movie is a blast from start to finish with plenty of gore and a ton of laughs. Harrelson is incredible as Tallahassee and by the end of the movie, you find yourself crossing your fingers for the man to get his Twinkie. And Bill Murray (Ghostbusters) has the most memorable cameo of all time, playing himself. Zombieland is a must-see this Halloween! Zombieland is available to rent on Amazon and i-Tunes.

10. The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) – Guaranteed, you have never seen anything like The Rocky Horror Picture Show… ever. This campy musical/horror movie is a classic and has a following like no other. It follows the story of a newly engaged couple,  Janet (Susan Sarandon) and Brad (Barry Bostwick) whose car breaks down and they find themselves taking shelter in the home of Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry). A string of catchy and sometimes dark song and dance routines follow Brad and Janet as they spend the night with Frank-N-Furter’s quirky staff and encounter his bizarre experiments. This film is such a classic that many theaters offer Halloween sing-along screenings where costumes are strongly encouraged. But if you decide to spend the night at home on Halloween, why not invite some friends over and host your own evening with Dr. Frank-N-Furter! The Rocky Horror Picture Show is available to rent on i-Tunes and Amazon.
