Pulp Fiction and Mary Poppins. Two films that I bet you never thought you’d hear mentioned in the same sentence, let alone in the same news article. Well, as it turns, out they have one very important thing in common: the Library of Congress has decided that both of these iconic films are “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant,” and have added them to this year’s National Film Registry (NFR).
Established in 1988, the National Film Preservation Act, in conjunction with the National Film Preservation Foundation, raises money from the private sector to preserve films that are deemed important for their contribution to society and to protect the nation’s fragile film heritage.
“The National Film Registry stands among the finest summations of more than a century of extraordinary American cinema,” said James H. Billington, the Librarian of Congress. “This key component of American cultural history, however, is endangered, so we must protect the nation’s matchless film heritage and cinematic creativity.”
Each year, 25 new films are selected by the Librarian and added to the Registry. Suggestions for additions can come from the facility’s curators, members of the Preservation Board and the general public. This year’s additions bring the total number of films in the Registry to 625.
The Registry is not limited to only Hollywood films; documentaries, experimental films, cartoons and student films are also on the list and eligible for suggestion. Roger & Me, the Michael Moore documentary which details the effects of plant closures on the working class families of Flint, Michigan, and the cinéma vérité Cicero March that takes a look at a civil rights march in a white suburb of Chicago, were also among this year’s additions.
