Ever since Phil “CM Punk” Brooks left WWE on bad terms in January of 2014, WWE shows all around the globe have been characterized by recurring crowd chants for the superstar. Usually, these chants are done to express disinterest in WWE’s current product or just to get under the skin of WWE management. According to a recent report, this past Monday Night RAW, which aired live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, was no exception.
Usually, however, these chants are largely ignored or shot down when they begin to start up, as several of WWE’s current performers take offense to them. Stephanie McMahon famously became fed up with the defiance on another episode of RAW, which aired live from Chicago (Punk’s hometown) in December of 2016.
However, when the infamous chants picked up again after this week’s RAW went off the air, legendary wrestling icon and Hollywood golden boy Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson did something rather unexpected; he called Punk from the middle of the ring and encouraged the voracious Los Angeles crowd to leave him a voicemail.
The Rock had initially come to the ring to film shots for the upcoming biopic about WWE superstar Paige‘s life and in-ring career entitled Fighting With My Family, but, when Rock addressed the crowd, the chants started up. Instead of simply ignoring the chants or insulting the crowd, the Rock decided to call up the former WWE Champion.

Though CM Punk, who has put wrestling behind him in order to focus on other ventures, didn’t answer his phone, he did later take to Twitter to acknowledge the incident. “Thanks Los Angeles. Nice to hear from you,” Punk wrote. According to a rumor picked up by Pro Wrestling Insider, WWE management was very unhappy with The Rock for the stunt, but, due to his status as a legend and his ties to the film industry, it’s unlikely that he’s sweating it.

This event marks the first time in years that CM Punk has interacted with the WWE Universe, but fans of the superstar shouldn’t get their hopes up for a return of any kind. Punk’s strong disinterest in wrestling coupled with the ongoing legal battles between the two parties makes it next to impossible for that to happen — at least for now. But, as they say in wrestling, never say never.
