A new name has been thrown into the mix for ABC’s new, single-camera comedy, An American Education. A representative from ABC Studios announced to TheWrap that Rosie Perez will star opposite Jack Whitehall.
Perez, who recently stared with Penelope Cruz and Michael Fassbender in The Counselor, will play the no-nonsense vice principal Rita Gomez. Her’s and Whitehall’s character’s, Alfie Wickers, teaching methods don’t match and promise some drama within the comedy.
The show is based on the BBC Three show Bad Education, which Whitehall also starred in, and has Wicker’s as a young British teacher in a San Diego public school. The young teacher won’t always get along with his colleagues, but will have a crush on the chemistry teacher.
The American pilot was written by Peter Huyck and Alex Gregory with Whitehall and Ben Cavey. All four will serve as executive producers.
The pilot will be shot early 2014, and if picked up in May, will premier on the network later that year.
