The holidays just got a little bit brighter for members and fans of the Harry Potter community! Even if you don’t actively celebrate Christmas, it’s still nice to wake up to the author of your favorite book series sending you good tidings and cheer. That’s exactly what JK Rowling did for her fans!
Rowling has always been mindful of her fans and what they are going through. She takes time to respond to their comments and make sure they know she hears them, no matter where they are. In her “heartfelt 12-part Christmas message” on Saturday, December 24, she acknowledged “people who are going through very hard times.” These hard times aren’t just in the holiday season, but year-round. The American climate is a bit touchy at the moment, and its relationships with certain foreign governments could be better — that’s not to mention Brexit.
“At this time of year, we’re bombarded with images of perfect lives, which bear as little relation to reality as tinsel does to gold,” Rowling wrote. “If you’re lucky enough to be with the people you love, warm and safe, with enough to eat, I’m sure you feel as blessed as I do.
“But if your life is currently full of difficulties; if you aren’t where you want to be, either literally or figuratively, remember that extraordinary transformations are possible,” she continued. “Everything changes. Nothing is forever.”
Rowling, then, comforted her fans with a story about her very own “worst Christmas” experience. She said she “found it hard to believe that [her] unhappiness would pass” and “was truly afraid of the future.”
“Remember, Christmas day is, in the end, just a day. It isn’t a test or a scorecard of you or your life, so be kind to yourself.”
Be kind to yourself and to others. Not everyone is going through the same stuff as you and may need some extra help. Rowling, herself, had an amazing year in show business, what with her new stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and the wizarding world prequel Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them being so popular.
“You never know what the future holds. Astonishing reversals of fortune happen every minute.”
Ah, Jo, you always have the right words to bring a smile to our faces. Never change.
