Ryan Reynolds Recalls The First Time He Met Blake Lively

Deadpool’s Ryan Reynolds talks about the first time he met his wife, Blake Lively, and what song he played while she was in labor with their first child.

As we may recall, the Green Lantern movie did not make a big splash. Maybe it was the unattractive green of the spandex superhero suits. Maybe it was the obvious lack of identity concealment afforded to our hero by the small facemask.

Whatever the reason for its less than stellar (or intergalactic) success, Reynolds was still able to meet and fall in love with his now-wife, Blake Lively.

Jess Cagle (People and EW) sat down with Reynolds shortly after his Deadpool debut. Needless to say, the sparks between Reynolds and Lively were more than visible, even if the post-Green Lantern date was less than ideal.

“For about a year Green Lantern had come and gone, we were both single,” Reynolds recalled. “We went on a double date; she was on a date with another guy, and I was on a date with another girl. That was the most awkward date for the respective parties, because there was just fireworks coming across.”

As well as reliving his initial meeting with Lively, Reynolds shared his opinion on why Green Lantern failed as a movie (and possibly a franchise, but we’re getting ahead of ourselves). Unfortunately, a lot of the superhero movies these days get the Hollywood treatment. Reynolds calls it the “Hollywood disease,” and it’s completely true.

This is, of course, separate from the band Hollywood Undead .

Now well into their marriage, Reynolds revealed in an interview on Late Night With Seth Meyers that he pranked his wife while she was in labor with their first child, James.

“I jammed a little Marvin Gaye, ‘Let’s Get It On,’” Reynolds said. “It was like steak knives came out of her eyes. ‘Are you —– right now?’”

All joking aside, though, Reynolds has some indispensable advice for new dads (and just partners in general): don’t shirk the dirty work.

“Just do the dirty work, man,” Reynolds said. “You gotta do the diapers, you gotta do the middle of the night thing. A human being will exit your wife. She’s done enough.”

From an awkward double date to Marvin Gaye, Ryan Reynolds sure does know a thing or two about keeping it real.
