Sean Astin will be returning to the screen, the small screen that is! The Lord Of The Rings star is joining the cast of the new drama on FX called The Strain, produced by Carlton Cuse, the same producer from the hit series Lost. He announced the news via Twitter on Tuesday:

Guillermo Del Toro (Pacific Rim) had already directed the pilot, and it’s based on a trilogy of books that he co-wrote with Chuck Hogan. Astin will not have to fret about being alone on set, as he will have Cory Stoll, Kevin Durand, Mia Maestro, Richard Sammel, Lauren Lee Smith, Johnathan Hyde, Miguel Gomez, and John Hurt acting as his co-stars. Sean Astin is going to be playing CDC administrator Jim Kent, and will be the third member of the Canary Team alongside Ephraim Goodweather (Cory Stoll) and Nora Martinez (Mia Maestro). The Canary team is tasked with curing and containing a mysterious strain of vampirism that is spreading all over Manhattan. Here is the official description:

The Strain is a high concept thriller that tells the story of Ephriam Goodweather, who is the head of a team for the Center Of Disease Control Canary team in New York City. He and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with the hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. Eph realizes this isn’t some new bioterror weapon, but something much older, something out of the reach of science, he teams up with Abraham (John Hurt) to fight back. As a plague of hungry and intelligent predators overwhelm New York, Eph, Abraham and a motley crue of everyday New Yorkers form a ragtag resistance- fighting monsters in the streets and in their homes, waging a war against humanity itself.”
