Star Wars: The Force Awakens Close To Shattering Avatar’s Record

After yet another chart topping weekend in theaters, Star Wars: The Force Awakens could break Avatar’s domestic ticket sales record in only 4 weeks.

To the surprise of no one, Star Wars: The Force Awakens once again took control of the North American box office over the holiday weekend. This weekend the project collected more than $88.3 million. This is the third week for the film, which opened on December 18th. This brings the total for the movie to more than $740 million in domestic ticket sales, and more than $1.5 billion in global ticket sales. Currently, the domestic ticket sale record for all time sales is Avatar, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens is only $18 million below that record.

The other movies that competed with Star Wars: The Force Awakens in sales this week, such as The Hateful Eight, Quentin Tarantino’s newest film, and Daddy’s Home, a comedy starring Will Farrell and Mark Wahlberg, were no competition at all.

Daddy’s Home was in its second week and brought in $29 million for a total of almost $94 million and The Hateful Eight brought in only $16.2 million in domestic sales, bringing its total to $29.6 million.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in China this coming Saturday, so analysts expect that global sales will soar once again while domestic records will surely be crushed.

Have you seen Star Wars: The Force Awakens? If so do you think that it will go all the way and break Avatar’s record?
