Nashville star Laura Benanti has been tapped to play Supergirl’s mother, the role of Alura Zor-El in the upcoming CBS series. The actress is currently labeled as a recurring guest star (which is appropriate for Supergirl’s back story), given Benanti’s character is known for sending her daughter away from a dying Krypton. The cast will also include Melissa Benoist as Kara Zor-El aka Supergirl, Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen, and the newly added Calista Flockhart as a media tycoon and employer of the hero’s normal alter ego .
Greg Berlanti who additionally produces the CW’s Arrow and The Flash, is helming the Supergirl series that will air in the fall. Supergirl will differ from Smallville (a pre-quel to the Man Of Steel’s Superman days), as the story picks up with a 24 year old Kara going public with her Supergirl persona after hiding her identity from the world. I can’t wait to find out what the upcoming CBS series creates, but one thing is certain – it is nice to see a female superhero receive some love after a plethora of male heroes soaking in the spotlight.
