If you read The Giver in middle school, you’ll remember it features a utopian society that is not enough for a little boy who discovers a greater reality.
That book, shelved as a juvenile classic in most bookstores, will soon be brought to the big screen! Starring Meryl Streep (The Devil Wears Prada), Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart), Alexander Skarsgard (True Blood), and Taylor Swift (Valentine’s Day), the movie follows the journey of young Jonas as he is tutored by The Giver (Bridges) about the true nature of the world around him.
Swift has been quoted as having “learned a lot,” from the role. “It’s crazy how educational just getting into a situation and doing it [is].” The situation she is referring to is working with Streep and Bridges, as both have starred in several well-known films and won Academy Awards.
“I couldn’t believe it was happening to me. I still can’t believe I shot in South Africa and shot all my scenes with Jeff Bridges. It was unreal,” she told Access Hollywood recently.
Swift says that she learned more while filming than during any of her acting classes! It just goes to show; the will to learn refuses to be slowed by fame.
“I have taken acting classes and read as much as I possibly can on it and done theater before all this started, [but] you learn more by actually doing it than you could ever learn in preparation.”
At 22, Swift has nurtured a growing fanbase as a star within the music industry and has taken on several movie/television roles. These include performances in The Lorax, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and New Girl, among others.
All this helped pave the way for her to star as Rosemary in this new movie alongside Bridges and Streep. Despite all of the work she has done to date, Swift ultimately describes her time filming The Giver as “one of the most amazing experiences of my life. Honestly.”
“I couldn’t believe I got to be a part of the experience. And I just tried to work as hard as I could and just throw myself into that environment as much as I possibly could and it was really long hours and it was a lot of preparation and getting into character and all that.”
The screenplay for The Giver was written by Michael Mitnick and is based on Lois Lowry’s novel of the same name. We expect it to hit US theaters on August 15, 2014.
