Fans of the Hulk may have to get used to waiting for the big guy’s solo film, as, according to Bruce Banner/The Hulk actor Mark Ruffalo, there are no plans to give him his own film any time soon.
“I want to just make one thing perfectly clear today: A standalone ‘Hulk’ movie will never happen,” said Ruffalo at Disney’s D23 Expo. “Universal has the rights, and for some reason, they don’t know how to play well with Marvel. And, they don’t want to make money.”
Ruffalo is referring to back when Marvel sold the movie rights to various characters to stave off bankruptcy. This is the reason behind Sony’s rights to Spider-Man and Fox’s rights to the X-Men and Fantastic Four. Though Sony has made their own deal with Marvel to feature the web slinger in the MCU, Universal’s hold on the solo Hulk film remains strong, and it does not seem like they want to give back the rights any time soon.
Hulk can however still feature alongside the Avengers, and will be appearing in Thor: Ragnarok with the god of thunder himself, which hits the big screen in November.
New details about Avengers: Infinity War were spread at D23, though we only got bits and pieces. One thing that has been confirmed is that Black Widow and The Hulk will have an emotional reunion. Marvel fans will remember that the two previously had a shaky romance in Age of Ultron that was put to a halt when Bruce Banner ran away. Though the relationship garnered mixed reviews from fans—some saying that it came out of nowhere and that Black Widow was better paired with Hawkeye—the continuity of the story is being kept intact by acknowledging it. Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters May 4, 2018.
