The Invisible Man Screenwriter Leaves Project

It looks like another nail has been added to the coffin of the Dark Universe, as the writer for the upcoming Invisible Man has left the project.

Hey, remember how the Dark Universe was supposed to launch with Dracula Untold until that bombed? As did their second attempt to launch it with The Mummy? And how it was eventually put on hold, presumably until they could come up with a new plan of action? Well, it looks like another nail has been added to the coffin of this attempt at a franchise, as the writer for the upcoming Invisible Man film has reportedly left the project.

The Invisible Man, much like The Mummy, certainly seemed to have plenty of star power both in front of the camera and behind it. In addition to Johnny Depp starring as the titular character, Men In Black writer Ed Solomon has signed on to write the script. However, it was announced earlier this week that he is no longer affiliated with the project.

So, what happened? It’s not exactly clear at the moment whether he left voluntarily or was fired from the project, but it has been confirmed in an interview with Digital Spy that he’s no longer working on the script.

“At the end of the day, I think Universal and I had a different idea of what the movie was gonna be,” Solomon said. “We began thinking that our notions would meld, and I should’ve listened more closely to what they really were wanting.”

Solomon isn’t the first person to ditch the Dark Universe. After the failure that was The Mummy, director Alex Kurtzman and producer Chris Morgan both left the franchise. As they were the ones who were supposed to guide the film series as a whole, it very much feels like the Dark Universe’s future is up in the air.

In addition to being without a writer, there is the debate surrounding its lead star, as allegations of domestic abuse have already made him a controversial part of the upcoming Fantastic Beasts film. Is there even a future for this film? Will anyone really want to see it anymore?

While there are other Dark Universe films still technically in the planning stages, the only monster in this series who still seems to have some semblance of a future is The Bride Of Frankenstein—the director, Bill Condon, has said he’s primarily focused on making this a standalone film, a fact which could be the thing that saves it.
