The Walt Disney Company recently acquired the technology-driven media company, Maker Studios, for $500 million. The deal was announced on Monday. Maker Studios is a top You Tube multichannel network. It is home to many top stars including KassemG, The Game Station, Nice Peter’s “Epic Rap Battles of History,” the Shaytards, Andrea’s Choice, The Yogscast, Snoop Lion, The Gregory Brothers, Mike Tompkins, and actress/comedian LisaNova.

Maker was initially formed by a team of individual YouTubers who wanted to increase the number of views and subscribers of each star by directing each other’s dispersed audiences and skill sets. Maker manages about 55,000 channels, which attracts 5.5 billion views a month and 380 million subscribers.

The deal is about distribution and programming expertise. Disney is counting on Maker to acquire knowledge on how to effectively interact with the young generation. Maker is not the only multichannel network on YouTube, but it is the largest.

Disney is not the only company that sees promise in YouTube. Dreamworks Animation recently acquired AwesomenessTV, which focuses on attracting a teenage audience. Before Dreamworks acquired the YouTube channel, it had 400,000 subscribers and 80.6 million views. Today, the YouTube channel has more than 1.2 million subscribers and 283 million views.

One of the founders, Shay Carl, just hit two million subscribers. The famous YouTuber and father of five adorable children posted a video on Instagram with his wife asking what are they going to do next. Their three older children happily yelled, “We’re going to Disneyland!”

The caption on the hilarious and adorable video read, “We just sold @MakerStudios & hit 2 million youtube subscribers! What are we going to do next?”

Congrats to everyone at Maker Studios and the Shaytards!
