The Whispers: 01×05, What Lies Beneath

The nuclear power plant disaster was averted, but that doesn’t seem to be the end of Drill’s master plan on this week’s The Whispers.

When we last saw The Whispers, a nuclear power plant had a meltdown with ZERO fallout. Also, there was an awkward little Bennigan family reunion inside a reactor. So, that’s something.

Henry and Claire are being scanned for radioactivity by some really suited-up scientists in the most freaky and sterile environment ever. They’re wheeled down a hall, holding hands before being abruptly separated.

The powers that be are finally having their “Oh, shit.” moment about the fact a bunch of radioactivity just disappeared into thin air. Wes says the only person that can explain it is the person who has no clue who he is: Sean.

Claire and Henry get checked out further, and they have no radiation exposure at all. They should be dead and the doctor considers all of this a miracle, but Claire is 200% skeptical with life right now and doesn’t take that for an answer.

Sean is being interrogated while strapped to a lie detector. Wes interrupts, as the questioning is going nowhere, and takes over to get through to Sean. At first, Wes is all, “Stop faking the amnesia crap, bud”, but as time goes on he comes to realize that Sean absolutely has no idea who he is or what is going on. “Look at me. I have nothing. No memories, no past, barely a present… and the future? Mere notion of a future scares the hell out of me. My shadow knows more than I do.” All Sean can recall is waking up in the desert with a piece of rock in his back… one that I’m sure belongs to our amigo Drill. He explains to Wes that he can feel it and suddenly the polygraph machine starts recording in a very odd pattern.

A child sits at a table putting a homemade bomb together while the lights flicker. Great.

Lena wakes up outside Minx’s door just as Wes comes home. He tells her that she and Minx are getting the hell out of dodge, as there’s something awful going on with their child. Lena fights back saying that he is home and she isn’t leaving, prompting the two to share an intimate moment.

Claire explains to Henry that there are men at the house to keep them safe (HAHA OKAY SURE) and that Sean will be home soon, hopefully. Rollins rolls up (not sorry, I think that is funny to read), telling Claire she’s off the case and he’s there for her files. She thanks him for stalling for her while she was running in the reactor – maybe this relationship can be salvaged.

Minx is all happy because she got her wish – that Drill got her mommy and daddy back together again. Lena looks like she pees her pants a little upon hearing this, and I can’t say I blame her.

Claire goes to Wes’ office to try and gain access to Sean. She looks at him and says the words we’ve all been wondering now, “I don’t think we’re dealing with a who. I think we’re dealing with a what.” Who is so much better than what, and a million times less frightening. Claire gets in and talks to Sean, telling him that they’re married. She tries to jog his memory with photos of their family, their wedding day. He asks if they were happy and she simply replies “We were married.” Ouch. Wes takes an emotional punch to the gut, leaving the room.

The polygraph operator shows Wes what happened and his eyes light up. He compares the graph with a photo of the mysterious desert rock tree – they’re the exact same shape. Um, what?

Claire reminisces meeting Sean; she hated him at first, but he swept her off of her feet. He can’t make a connection, no matter how hard she tries.

Minx is running around a gigantic child’s playplace, which is pretty much like a living puppet factory for Drill with all these kids to pick from. Lena talks with another adult and finds out that the child psychiatrist Minx spoke to was killed in a freak accident. Yeah, accident.

Wes speaks with a co-worker, desperate to find another way to solve the riddle. He over hears his secretary explain to her child how to fix his science fair volcano, “Yes, your friend is right… it’s the heat underneath the volcano that will make it explode.” The light bulb goes on over Wes’ head – he has to go back to the desert rock tree. Lena isn’t happy about him leaving, especially with Minx being all sketchy still.

Sean shows Claire all his tattoos, explaining each one is important and has led to an event. The link between all of them is power, energy… and death. However, there is one tattoo that he hasn’t figured out: “As 33”.

Claire figures it out for him – it’s off of the periodic table of elements and it stands for Arsenic. Rollins and Claire brainstorm to realize that Arsenic + reactor fallout = atomic bomb of the ‘holy shit’ persuasion. Drill, what is your issue with Earth!? They have some people search every university and laboratory with arsenic supplies under the sun for anything that  may be missing.

Lena talks to a fellow mother, saying that Minx is turning into a brat. She tells her that the imaginary friend isn’t so imaginary… which pretty much seals this woman’s fate, because Drill is a control freak.

Claire is cleaning up around the house when it hits her – the As 33 is from a baseball jersey… belonging to the kid who was rigging the bomb to place under his volcano. Drill has some serious connections, let me tell you.

In the desert, scientists give Wes photos, saying there can’t be anything underground. The local authorities come by to claim whatever they dig up, it belongs to their country and not the US. Machines are brought in and they start to dig into the dirt…

Claire goes to the house of the bomb child, begging to speak to him.

The backhoes tear down the mysterious rock tree as local townsfolk watch from afar.

Ethan, the boy with the bomb, shows Claire his volcano. It’s a simple science project, relax! Here’s the button that will make it explode – ta da! She asks about Drill and he admits they’re friends, that Drill ordered him to make the volcano, talk to his mother about it at a certain time. His mother bursts in the door – it’s Wes’ secretary. Oh. No.

Wes looks up behind him to see more townsfolk gathering to watch the ruckus. The backhoe hits something hard, doesn’t move past it – at the same time, thousands of miles away, Sean is in pain… like the backhoe is digging into him. What was the machine stuck on?

Basically, a blue glowing rock that is faintly beating like a heart.

Sean looks worried beyond belief, “They found it.”

Claire is trying to get a hold of Wes but he doesn’t pick up the phone.

Lena is cleaning up around the house when a creepy noise occurs. She flicks off the lights (as if that can stop Drill) and closes the blinds. Another noise happens just outside when the phone rings and makes her jump sky high. It’s Claire and she’s worried about Wes, being unable to contact him. She thinks that Wes is a target, that Drill wanted him to go to Africa.

Lena digs a gun out of the safe, recedes to her bedroom and places the firearm on the nightstand, waiting for whatever comes next.

Outside, Rollins is watching Lena and Wes’ house, as ordered by his boss. He is also watching Claire, which isn’t shady at all. Rollins wants answers but his boss is Captain Vague.

They dig the blue, glowing ‘heart’ out of the ground and there is an immense electrical surge. The townsfolk have all gone, an ill sign. Wes approaches the blue glow and it intensifies once it faces towards him, as if a light switch was turned on.

I don’t even know what to think anymore. WHAT is Drill?
