Freeform’s new show, Shadowhunters, is about a girl who learns that she is a member of a group of elite demon hunters whose sole purpose is to protect mankind against the Shadow World. And where Shadowhunters features a seriously kickass girl as its main character (think Buffy The Vampire Slayer for a new generation), Clary Fray is surrounded by some seriously beautiful men. And I mean beautiful…not merely handsome or pleasant to look at, but honest-to-gosh, jaw dropping, how-do-these-guys-actually-exist-in-our-reality-gorgeous. And for this week’s Thirsty Thursday, we are going to pay homage to these angelic men.
Dominic Sherwood is Jace Wayland, the tough, arrogant hunter who frequently leaps before he looks and has emotional walls to rival the big one in China. He smirks and smolders his way through every scene and right into our hearts (and Clary’s).
As if that weren’t enough, Sherwood was born in Kent, England. Which means that buried beneath Jace’s American accent is Sherwood’s real one…and if you’ve heard him speak, you know what I’m talking about. If not, you can see our interview with Sherwood and Katherine McNamara (Clary) at New York Comic Con below:
……….. sorry, I just lost my train of thought. Where was I?
Oh, right! Dominic Sherwood…we were talking fact stuffs. You might also recognize him from his role in Vampire Academy or Taylor Swift’s video for the song Style. His casting in Shadowhunters is nothing shy of perfect; I don’t think there’s any denying the boy could be part angel. I mean…just look at that grin…
Alberto Rosende is our Simon Lewis, the sweetheart of a nerd whose devotion to Clary is sure to make any girl melt. He’s intelligent, kind, thoughtful, funny, looks hot in glasses and rocks out in an indie band. What more could you ask for?
With that wavy dark hair and eyes to get lost in, Alberto’s secret weapon is his Cuban-Colombian descent. And when he starts speaking in Spanish, all bets are off! Ladies, prepare to swoon! In the video below, he’s talking about his favorite foods for Spanish Heritage Month. Now, if he can actually cook these dishes himself, he might want to prepare for the singles stampede coming his way.
Oh, and then there’s the surprise that lurks beneath his shirt. During the series premiere, when Simon took off his shirt by the van outside of Pandemonium, we were blessed by the appearance of a set of abs that could grate cheese. And I still stand by my original advice to the Shadowhunters wardrobe department – Simon really doesn’t need any shirts. He really, really doesn’t.
Next we have Matthew Daddario. His character, Alec Lightwood is…well, let’s be honest, he’s kinda miserable right now. He doesn’t smile much (or at all) and he tends to skulk around quite a bit, grumbling about the mundanes that just won’t go away. But we forgive you, Alec. We know there’s something buried deep, down inside that needs to come out and we’re here for you.
We know that one day – sweet, sweet Alec, one day you will smile. You might even laugh and stop looking at Clary and Simon like they’re something you just scraped off the bottom of your boot. And maybe you’ll stop flinching when a puppy licks your nose – because puppies are cute, Alec.
But you know what we like more than puppies? We like Matthew Daddario. We like Matthew because he looks like he was carved from marble by Michelangelo himself. And he gives up some seriously lovely performances like in Naomi & Ely’s No Kiss List. So, we look forward to the day when Alec smiles because that will be a glorious day, indeed.
Harry Shum Jr. is Magnus Bane, the sexy, mysterious warlock that runs Pandemonium. Fans might recognize Shum from Glee. But forget that…forget it right now because as much as we loved the way he danced (and the man can move), that’s nothing compared to the simmering sensuality he brings across in Magnus. I mean, just look at him – a Warlock King holding court with all the lesser Lords and Ladies only there because he deigns to allow it. I would watch a show that’s just all Magnus, all the time.
Harry’s quiet power comes bubbling up with Magnus and we can’t help but be mesmerized. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that he can rock guy-liner and fingernail polish better than Johnny Depp and when he flashes those fierce yellow eyes, you just want to do exactly what he says because…well, because. And I have no idea what’s happening with that Great Dane dressed up in bondage gear, but I want more of it!
When all is said and done, Harry Shum Jr.’s Magnus is just how I pictured him in the books and I can’t wait to see more of him in the future…a lot more!
Isaiah Mustafa is Luke Garroway, the former Shadowhunter with a secret. He’s desperately in love with Clary’s mother, Jocelyn, but doesn’t dare tell her. He’s a father-figure for Clary, a policeman and all-around good guy.
We first came to truly…appreciate Isaiah in the brilliant series of Old Spice commercials where he made us swoon with his voice as smooth as velvet and you know…the fact that he was shirtless most of the time really didn’t hurt either. But Isaiah has quite a television career as well and you’ve likely seen him on some of your favorite shows.
As things ramp up on Shadowhunters, we can look forward to more Luke! And, fingers crossed, we’ll get more shirtless Isaiah because if you’ve read the books, you know his secret and shirts? Well, they just kinda get in the way, don’t you think?
We hope you’ve enjoyed our little tribute to the gorgeous men of Shadowhunters! Make sure you tune in for new episodes on Freeform, Tuesdays at 9/8PM Central.
